10 Tips to Prevent tooth decay

Tooth decay is damaging the structure of the tooth and affecting both the enamel (the outer coating of the tooth) and the dentin layer of the tooth.

Our tooth being the hardest parts of your body that doesn’t make it resistant to bacterial attack. Tooth decay commonly occurs when foods containing carbohydrates, such as candy, milk, bread, fruits, cereals, cakes, or soda are left in between the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth absorb these foods, forming acids. Further these, acid, bacteria, food leftovers, and saliva come together to form plaque, which clings to the teeth. The decaying process causes hidden damage to the enamel and then gradually progresses to deeper layers of the tooth ultimately affecting the pulp. The pulp of your teeth comprises of highly-sensitive blood vessels and nerves.

 1.    Brush twice a day

Brush twice a day for 2-minutes with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Brushing will reduce plaque buildup and removes cavity-causing foods from your teeth. Make it a habit to brush after each meal especially, before going to bed.

2.    Floss regularly

Flossing will remove food particles from between your teeth and under the gums. It reaches the areas where the toothbrush cannot reach.

3.    Try oil pulling

Gently swish 1 – 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your mouth and between your teeth for 10-15 minutes. It is a natural way to reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth. As a word of caution: Do not swallow the oil as it is hopefully full of bacteria and plaque.

4.    Rinse after meals and snacks

Rinse daily with a fluoride-containing mouthwash. Some rinses also have antiseptic ingredients that help kill bacteria that cause plaque. Using mouthwash to can prevent tooth decay and cavities, reduce plaque buildup, and reduce the chance of causing gingivitis.

5.    Avoid sugary foods

Sugary and sticky foods are the best friends of the bacteria in your mouth. The bacteria in your mouth feed-off of sugary foods, and then start to cover your teeth with harmful acids. Try to avoid the stickier choices like caramel and taffy, which are harder to remove from teeth.

6.    Chew gum with xylitol

Chewing gum after meals can help to promote saliva production to wash bacteria and plaque from your teeth. Chewing gum is particularly helpful if you have the constant dry mouth.

7.    Sip carbonated beverages through a straw

Carbonated soft drinks are also very acidic. Acids in drinks and food can break down enamel and raise the risk of tooth decay.

8.    Eat a healthy diet

Eat the abundance of fiber-rich vegetables and fruits this will stimulate saliva flow. Saliva is a natural defense against cavities as it prevents bacteria and plaque from sticking to your teeth. Eat dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt it contains several essential nutrients for healthy teeth. Calcium, Vitamin D, and phosphates in dairy are essential for healthy teeth as your teeth are primarily made up of calcium.

9.    Have an apple for dessert
